Box City Demonstration and Food Drive | May 26-27

The Crossroads Senior High Youth Group at Brigantine Community Presbyterian Church is planning their second annual demonstration project known as “Box City” to raise consciousness about homelessness by reminding others that “Anyone’s life can be flipped upside down.” Twenty local high school students intend to live in cardboard boxes on the front lawn of the Brigantine Community Presbyterian Church for one night – May 26-27.

Crossroads hopes to raise 100 boxes of nonperishable foods, personal hygiene items, and clothing items to help aid the homeless during the demonstration, which begins at 4 p.m. on May 26. The items collected will be distributed between Sister Jean Webster’s Kitchen and the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

Items needed for donation include: socks, underwear, toiletries, gently used clothing, bottled water, hats, Chapstick, toothpaste/tooth brush, crackers, granola bars, nuts, mouthwash, tote bags, sunscreen, foot powder and deodorant.

FEATURE: Upper Room Outreach

An outreach that reaches way, way out

By Dom Ruggiero

I recently had the pleasure of talking to one of the most interesting people i have ever met. Her name is Mary Materniak, or Pastor Mary as she is known by her volunteers and the many people she helps.

A former missionary, Pastor Mary has been to more places than that fellow in black with a guitar who sings “I’ve been everywhere man, I’ve been everywhere.” India, Asia, Europe, South America, Africa; throw a dart at a world map and chances are Pastor Mary has been there.

During that time she saw many things…….poverty, famine, depression, oppression and sickness. But she always stayed focused on her mission to minister to the people.

“You can’t teach the message of the gospel and Jesus Christ to anyone if their stomach is empty and they are hungry,” she said. “Feed them, clothe them, help them, teach them and they will listen.”

One day about four years ago God came calling.
